What Survivors Need to Know
The Basic Benefit
Up to 100% of Your Spouse's Benefit
As a surviving spouse, you may receive up to 100% of what your deceased spouse was collecting (or was entitled to collect) at their FRA. This is significantly more than the 50% spousal benefit while they were living.
Timing Matters
Age Affects Your Survivor Benefit
Claiming survivor benefits early (as young as 60) permanently reduces the benefit. Waiting until your own FRA gets you the full 100%. Unlike your own SS benefit, survivor benefits do not grow past your FRA â there's no benefit to waiting until 70.
The Widow's Limit
RIB-LIM Protects You
If your spouse claimed SS early and received a reduced benefit, your survivor benefit is limited to the greater of what they were actually receiving, or 82.5% of their full FRA benefit. You're protected from receiving less than 82.5% of their FRA amount.
The Two-Claim Strategy
Own Benefit + Survivor Benefit
You can switch between your own SS benefit and the survivor benefit. A powerful strategy: claim one early, then switch to the other at a later age. SSA always pays the higher of the two â you never receive both simultaneously.
