From Dangerously Sweet to Seriously Healthy: My Keto Journey Against Diabetes
From Dangerously Sweet to Seriously Healthy: My Keto Journey Against Diabetes
If you're anything like me, getting bloodwork done at the doctor's office used to feel pretty routine. You'd roll up your sleeve, chat about the weather, and wait impatiently for the small talk to end.
That is, until one day, your doctor comes in with raised eyebrows and says something like, "Oops, your A1C shows you have diabetes."
Wait—what? Diabetic?
Just like that, you've crossed the invisible line into an entirely new world, and trust me, it's not the fun, adventurous type of new world you dreamed about. It's more like finding out the rollercoaster you got on has no safety harnesses—and you're already speeding downhill.
I knew that diabetes could be in my future because my dad, his parents, and his brothers all were afflicted with that disease for years before they died of heart failure or stroke (which are complications of diabetes).
So, I had been tracking my A1C, but it had been in the normal range for years.
A1C: The Numbers That Actually Matter
Let me break down what those A1C numbers mean because, let's face it, most of us glaze over at medical jargon. To keep things straightforward, here’s the scoop:
- Normal: Below 5.7%
- Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
- Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
When your doctor utters those dreaded words—"you have diabetes"—it means your A1C has tipped past that critical threshold of 6.5%. But the scary news doesn't stop there. An A1C over 7% is dangerous, and if yours climbs above 9%, you're facing serious complications like cardiovascular disease, retinopathy (eye damage), nephropathy (kidney damage), neuropathy (nerve damage), and even severe foot problems.
Diabetes doesn't just quietly raise your blood sugar; it throws a party, invites unwanted guests, and leaves you cleaning up the mess.
Here's another sobering thought: Diabetes is officially the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. However, diabetes doesn't always appear explicitly on death certificates—but it secretly contributes to eight out of the top ten causes.
Sneaky, dangerous, and alarmingly common.
Are you feeling overwhelmed yet? Trust me—I was, too. But stick with me because there's hope (and bacon!) ahead.
My Wake-Up Call and the Great Carb Breakup
When my doctor broke the news about my Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, I wasn't just surprised, I was stunned. Sure, I'd been a bit reckless with cookies, pastries, and pizza nights, but who isn't occasionally guilty? Yet, there I was, facing an A1C far over the 7% range with my body practically screaming, "We need help here!"
Like many newly diagnosed diabetics, I spent sleepless nights picturing life as endless bland salads and sadness. Medication alone wasn't fixing my skyrocketing blood sugar levels. Determined to find a better solution, I dove headfirst into research, which led me directly to something I initially found absurd: the ketogenic (or keto) diet.
Luckily, I had a doctor friend who believed in the keto diet.
Alabama (where I live) has one of the highest adult obesity rates in the United States. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alabama's adult obesity rate is 38.3%, ranking it sixth among all states.
So, my friend, Dr. Tom, told me about his frustration trying to get people to change their lifestyles and eating habits. He also dug into the research and pointed me toward some excellent studies. The data didn’t lie.
Going keto seemed to be the opposite of a heart-healthy diet, yet, if the research were true, I could count on many health benefits.
Wait—Eat Bacon and Get Healthy?
Let's pause and appreciate the absurdity for a second—a diet where you eat bacon, eggs, avocados, chicken, and steak and still potentially reverse diabetes? It sounded like a scam or wishful thinking, but the science was undeniably compelling. Skeptical yet intrigued, I jumped in, secretly thinking, "At least I'll enjoy one last ride with a ribeye."
I gave up red meat years ago because it was bad for my heart. I don’t eat much of it today, but I’m not afraid of it anymore.
Within weeks, something incredible happened.
My glucose meter, previously my arch-nemesis, started flashing good news. My relentless cravings disappeared, and ten pounds of my excess 20 began to melt away without the constant feeling of deprivation.
And best of all, my stubborn A1C began a rapid descent, much to the delight (and astonishment) of my doctor.
Ketosis: The Secret Behind the Success
Why did keto work when so many other diets failed miserably?
It’s all about ketosis. When you drastically limit carbs, your body shifts gears—like going from sputtering on low-quality fuel to cruising smoothly on premium. In ketosis, your body burns fat instead of glucose, stabilizing blood sugar levels and significantly lowering insulin resistance—the real villain behind diabetes.
And as if that wasn't enough, keto meals taste fantastic.
I discovered creamy sauces, crispy bacon, buttery vegetables, juicy steaks, and even chocolate desserts—all guilt-free and blood-sugar-friendly. Trust me, keto doesn’t feel like punishment. It feels like discovering a delicious secret club where the password is "butter."
My wife was still skeptical. After all, we’d focused for 20 years on lowering my cholesterol levels. Heart disease seemed to be the culprit in my family. Even though I had regular coronary check-ups, including treadmill stress tests and the Holter monitor test, a 24-hour recording of continuous heart activity to detect irregular heart rhythms or abnormalities that might not appear during a shorter ECG test, my heart health improved.
Within six months, my cholesterol dropped nearly 100 points and stayed there.
My Mistakes, Your Roadmap
My keto journey wasn't always smooth.
Sure, I made rookie mistakes (like testing the waters with fries or donuts to make sure I hadn’t been cured, I guess), but each stumble taught me more about managing diabetes joyfully and effectively.
This journey inspired me deeply, and honestly, it shocked me how little the mainstream understood about keto’s power for people with diabetes.
I felt compelled to share my story.
The Book I Wish I Had When Diagnosed
That’s precisely why I wrote my new book, “Keto Diet for Diabetes Control.” It’s not just another fad diet guide; it’s my personal narrative—filled with honest reflections, the latest research, and plenty of practical tips.
Imagine having a friend who has walked the path before you, providing guidance, comfort, and even some crazy mistakes along the way. That’s precisely the kind of companion this book aims to be.
